These feelings and memories became the first round of designs. The initial feedback really pushed me and the collaboration continued. A little compromising between my ideas and the the band's landed us with 10 unique posters celebrating the result of making. Music, posters, art.
When Insound approached me about this project I was incredibly stoked. I don't ever do band posters, especially not posters for bands that helped shape who I am today. There is a strange rule in the creative world that has always confused me: If you haven't done a book you don't get hired to do books. If you haven't done a band poster you don't get hired to do band posters. At the same time that Insound reached out to me, I was also contacted by an ad agency about doing a similar project; a series of screen printed band posters for a big tour. The art buyer contacted me on behalf of the art director but was very skeptical of my ability to do the posters. I always argue that it should just be a matter of solving the particular problem. This is where Matt Wishnow from Insound comes in. Matt looked at my work and didn't flinch at the idea that I should do these posters.
Over the last few years I have been trying to figure out the best way to describe what I do. I have landed on the term "maker." There is something about this word that feels free to me. I don't want to be limited. I just want to make things. Posters, books, objects, drawings, movies. And that is what I did with these posters. I just made them. No hesitation, just jumped in. The process was not so different from other projects except that I had to make the decision whether to systematize them all or let them all be there own unique ideas. Each band has had a different role in my life so it felt right to let each poster inform itself. When I think of The Magnetic Fields I think of being in art school and making paintings. When I think of The Promise Ring I think of driving around Kansas at night with the windows down.
